Document 8, Chapter VII

Ida Wells-Barnett (1862–1931) achieved nationwide attention early in her career as a vocal opponent of lynching. First a teacher, and then a journalist, she eventually became an owner of the Memphis newspaper Free Speech. In May 1892, a mob ransacked her offices and threatened her life because of an article she wrote protesting a local lynching. Wells-Barnett moved to Chicago and in 1895 published The Red Record, the first documented statistical report on lynching in the United States.
